The 1924 Williamsburg High School yearbook was the second volume of “The Tattler”. It was the first year that the editors included photographs of all the seniors and composite shots of the other classes.
In their Foreword introducing the 1924 “Tattler” the editors declared: “We feel that its publication is now past the experimental stage and, we hope, has become an established custom….and we have put out a much larger annual than has ever been attempted….”
The Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Teams were the only athletic teams photographed for “The Tattler” in 1924—or for several more yearbook years.
In 1924, the Girls’ Basketball Team had 7 stalwart members, 4 of whom were seniors. Their coach, teaching-principal Anne T. Dunphy, would eventually have the town elementary school named for her. The girls’ season of 4 games saw only one victory, but it did not dampen their spirits.

The Boys’ Basketball Team also had 7 members, and was coached by teacher Vernon Stiles, who promoted the principles of clean sportsmanship and patient, steady work. The team won their first 4 games straight. Captain Edward Schuler, a senior, was described in the 1924 yearbook as “the greatest high school player [WHS] had ever turned out.”
The 1924 “Tattler” editors certainly had foresight. “The Tattler” had an uninterrupted reign as the WHS yearbook, until its last issue in 1971.
