The Williamsburg High School Class of 1951 did drama. Ten of the eighteen senior class members were part of the senior play “He Couldn’t Marry Five: A Comedy in Three Acts.” The play, by Robert N. St. Clair, was published in 1943. It tells the story of a young man pursued by five charming and talented sisters. It was directed by Eugene Titus—and was the culmination of the Senior Class activities.

a group of people, mostly young adults, stand and work together in a room. some are on chairs painting the wall, while others gather and watch.

The cast members were Bruce Purrington as Donald Regan; Betty Hathaway as Mother; Harry Pomeroy as Father; Dorothy Brewer as April; Murilyn Graves as May; Jean Ellen Harlow as June; Jane Smith as Taris; Marlene Shay as Leona; Shirley Hathaway as Etta; and Marilyn Black as Granny.

The play was presented to raise money for the eagerly awaited senior class trip to New York City during the April school vacation. The seniors scurried all around the big city and took in the sights up and down Manhattan and its environs. They became lost and then unlost. The group went to Grant’s Tomb, ferried to the Statue of Liberty, and explored the Museum of Natural History. The highlight of their adventure and a reward for their thespian activities was to see the actress Carol Channing star in the play “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.”

The seniors arrived safely back in Burgy and graduated together on June 21, 1951.
