Our town’s delayed 250th anniversary is quickly coming upon us—July 15-16-17, 2022. We will celebrate 250 + 1 years strong. As we remember the residents of the past and build our future as a town, take a walk through the resting place of many of our first citizens. The Old Village Hill Cemetery, that quirky, mini hilly burial ground has character and is lovely in all seasons.

The cemetery is almost as old as the town. In October 1771, the District of Williamsburgh “voted that Simeon White, Samuel Fairfield and John Nash be a Committee to Lay out the Land for a burying place.” By 1773, the fledgling town of Williamsburg had its first cemetery on this rather uneven portion of land from Jesse Wild’s farm.

Take a walk in the cemetery. “Visit” the earliest residents. Discover some of the interesting names of our town ancestors: Quartus and Hadassa and Lura and Densy and Euphemia and Valentine and Temperance and Ariel and Elkanah and Eliphalet and Mehetable and Salmon and Ilona and Jerusha and Lovina. Old Village Hill Cemetery is looking fresh and green this spring—at 249.
