Soon after it opened its doors, in 1897, the Meekins Library entered the 20th century. Librarians moved from hand- written catalogue cards to “modern” cards, typed on this premium typewriter, known as “The Fox.” Librarians were proficient typists, and kept the machine in good order, following the instructions in the manual and the cleaning and oiling guide using the special brush provided. “The Fox” and its assorted paraphernalia remain safe in Meekins Library Archives, a reminder of the pre-computer days, together with drawers full of the typed catalogue cards used for almost a century to find your favorite book.
