This rather serious portrait of the Williamsburg library’s namesake and benefactor, Stephen Meekins, hangs above the fireplace in what is now the new book room, dedicated to John and Alta Black. A local widowed and childless farmer, Meekins was persuaded to leave his money to fund a library for the town. The portrait was hung in the library when it was built, in 1896. This reimbursement receipt from May 11, 1896, shows that the Trustees spent $10 have the portrait brought to town!
Come in and enjoy perusing current magazines, the local newspapers, new books, puzzles, and more, relaxing in the comfy wing chairs near the windows. Stephen Meekins will be gazing down upon you. Meekins is open Tuesday 10-6; Wednesday 1-7; Thursday 3-6; and Saturday 9-2. Daria D’Arienzo, Meekins Archivist. #throwbackthursday; #tbt.
