Do you remember Sadie the much-loved grey and white Meekins Library cat? Sadie purred loudly when children visited—taking a break from her official job as the library’s “Chief Mouser.” Sadie started off in the Dakin Shelter. Life improved when the Meekins adopted her in September 1996. Sadie’s frequent birthday parties were the social events of the year— with meow music and cat masks for all.
Sadie was immortalized in the 2004 Ann Turner book, “Pumpkin Cat,” the story of a stray cat that comes to live in a small-town library with two librarians, Lisa and Rochelle. Sadie was particularly fond of the autumn. She would sit up on the top step between the columns of the original library portico, greeting people as they made their way up the mum-lined steps. For hours, she would bask in the sunshine on the big granite library step walls, looking very picturesque against big orange pumpkins.
The library was Sadie’s home for 13 years. She was laid to rest in the garden on May 24, 2008, surrounded by her Library family and friends who remember her fondly. Did you visit Sadie at Meekins? Do you have photograph to share? Remember Sadie during this beautiful autumn season. Daria D’Arienzo, Meekins Archivist. #throwbackthursday; #tbt.
