The Meekins Library takes care of its collection. Staff work hard to ensure all library materials are in good shape so that they can keep circulating to our patrons near and far. As part of National Library Week (April 7-13, 2024), the Meekins created a small exhibition alerting patrons to the perils faced by the books, DVDs, periodicals, manuscripts, photographs and more in the library.
BEWARE the hidden enemies of our library’s materials—water, high humidity, acidic paper, extreme heat, hours of direct light, bugs, pets, and more. When we keep our collections safe, they will serve us well. Patrons walk past and glance at the table chock full of examples of damaged materials—then they stop, turn back to the table, and spend time slowly and carefully looking at each item.
They see books that have taken a bath; paper so brittle is practically crumbles when you look at it; the tell-tale stain of a newspaper cutting tucked into the pages of a book; the faded spine and cover of both the book and the cloth left in the light; DVD cases “tasted” by a favorite pet; rubber bands stuck to files; paper clips rusted in place; and even a tunnel of the infamous bookworm.
Many remark: “I never knew this” or “I’ve never seen anything like this.” It is a showstopper. From more than 125 years Meekins has cared for its collection. We are committed to keeping the library materials safe and accessible for everyone in the community. Daria D’Arienzo, Meekins Archivist. #throwbackthursday; #tbt.
