It started in December 2008—a small venture. Like a one-table indoor tag sale with some things for kids, donated by library volunteers. The kids loved it—“shopping” at the Meekins—where they wanted to go anyway. But then the adults wondered why there wasn’t much there for them—so the next year we expanded. More tables and a whole section for adults. Patrons were happy—enjoying spending some time poking around the library for their books, DVDs, music and more and “shopping” too. After the second year the new tradition was established. From then on, each year in the fall, donations specifically for the holiday market came flowing in. In late November and all December, the Market is a special feature in the halls of the library. For some it becomes a quest—coming back regularly to see what they can find. Families come in—multi generations—all looking at the chock-full tables. The quirky Meekins Market and the enthusiastic response from the community even caught the attention of the national library community.
Now, in 2022, in its lucky 13th year (skipping 2020) everyone’s favorite, Meekins Market is back. Come in between November 19th and December 22nd and help make the Meekins’ very own special tradition a joyful success once again. Think of it as the hottest trend in recycling. Fun stuff @ a good deal! And know your donations will be supporting your community library. Daria D’Arienzo, Meekins Archivist. #throwbackthursday; #tbt.
