Do you remember story time at the Meekins Library? Did you come with your parents or siblings to listen to tales from around the world? Recalling those moments of your childhood, did you bring your own children? Our Children’s Librarian Rochelle, also a well-known local Storyteller, has been sitting in a circle reading to children in their special Picture Book Room for decades. Each story time is an adventure, with visits from her many sheep and tiger and cat and bird friends, books, stories, songs and sometimes dance. Some of Rochelle’s all-time favorite books to read are: “A Lot of Otters” by Barbara Helen Berger and “Miss Mary Mack,” adapted by Mary Ann Hoberman and Oh Kojo and “How Could You: An Ashanti Tale” by Verna Aardema.

Rochelle and the children gather in a circle and begin with a special song, going around the circle highlighting one thing each child is wearing that day—and it goes like this: “So and so is wearing their blue hat… all day long.” Picture book story time leads to songs and circle games around the room like—“All Around the Kitchen—Cock-a-Doodle-Do!” and “We’re Going to Kentucky; We’re Going to the Fair.” Rochelle’s story time follows in a long tradition at Meekins when long-time Librarians Lisa Wenner, Eleanor Hebert, Mary Wilson, and Myra Ilson welcomed children to the library for their special story hours. Even with this last crazy COVID year, Rochelle continues to share story time virtually on Wednesday and Saturday mornings on Facebook. When did you come for story time in person or virtually? What was your favorite story? #throwbackthursday; #tbt
