The Meekins Market, the Library’s special holiday tradition, is now in full swing, celebrating its 15th appearance in year 16 (with only one skip, 2020—COVID saw to that). It all started in November 2008, when the Library initiated a special recycling (and friend and fun-raising) sort of in- house tag sale, matching donated good quality new and gently used treasures and their stories with new homes.

With dedicated friends and community support, patrons provide the quick changing inventory and make regular selections. Children of all ages enjoy the fun of choosing something special from the packed tables that appeared in the Meekins hallway every year.

Children and adults will find lots of small, and not so small, inexpensive gifts to give friends and loved ones. Kids, don’t know what to give your sisters, brothers, or cousins? Grandparents, want something for the grandkids? Looking for an idea for your best friend, but your budget is limited? Find it at the Meekins Market. Most items are between 25 cents and 10 dollars. Find stuffed animals, games, decorative objects, household items, scarves and mittens, jewelry, holiday items, an occasional vintage surprise and much more. The tables are chock full—with new things coming in every day.

Think of it as the newest trend in recycling. Fun stuff @ a good deal!

Early on, the Meekins Market even caught the interest of “American Libraries”, with a column by the Archivist in the Nov./Dec. 2012 issue. This annual community event has always been combined with a food and warm clothing collection and exchange for the local community. The bins of warm clothing are here at Meekins, free for the taking, and also at the Pantry at the Grange. Stop by to have a look!

Come to the Meekins this holiday season—get your holiday library books, magazines and DVDS, enjoy the festive decorations, browse the Meekins Market, enter the popular 10 puzzle raffle (drawing on December 20), join in the clothing exchange, and taste the occasional treats that appear on the circulation desk. The Meekins Market will be up through December 21st. Meekins is open Tuesday 10-6; Wednesday 1-7; Thursday 3-6 and Saturday 9-2. Daria D’Arienzo, Meekins Archivist. #throwbackthursday; #tbt.
