“Aprons Tell Family Stories”—Now, through September 2025, the Meekins Library is displaying a special exhibition of well-loved family aprons in the Neil Hammer Gallery of the Hawks-Hayden Community Room. The aprons and vintage practical and decorative household items are drawn from the personal collections of Meekins Librarians Bev Bullock and Rochelle Wildfong and Meekins Archivist Daria D’Arienzo.

Aprons have always been practical. They are also often beautiful. Hand or machine stitched with love and care, reflecting the creativity and sewing, quilting and embroidery talents of their makers. Valued for the stories they tell we have saved them over time.

In our families, great-grandmothers, grandmothers, mothers, aunties, sisters, and even fathers and grandchildren wore aprons. And we all wear favorite aprons today.

Our hand-crafted aprons have been handed down through generations, from great-grandmother to grandmother to mother to daughter. They have been made in school or in our homes by mothers and sisters and friends. They have been gifts given to us and to our families. And they have been specially purchased as matched sets, for grandmother and grandchildren to enjoy baking together at home. In this exhibition, we share our well-loved aprons and our stories, together with family vintage household goods and crafts from our homes.

Every family has their apron stories. Come to the Meekins to enjoy the display and add your apron story to the guest book. Meekins is open Tuesday from 10-6; Wednesday from 1-7; Thursday from 3-6; and Saturday from 9-2. Share your photos and stories in the comments too. Add to the fun of this special exhibition.
