January 29, 2025, ushered in the Chinese Lunar New Year, marking the beginning of the Year of the Snake. What better way to celebrate, this year of transformations than a visit to Agnessss the Anaconda, the library’s second full grown slithery “weather gauge”. Agnessss, born on January 1, 2024, with a purple head and two black button eyes, reached her full 6-foot 4-inch length on December 31, 2024, plumper and a full 2 inches longer than her 2023 snake sibling Ssssmeekins.

Agnessss “grew” quickly, an uninterrupted one ring a day to reach her 365 “stripe days” length—plus her purple head and tail. For the entire 2024 year, Wenny, kept track of the temperature highs and lows in town and added ring after ring of colorful strips to Agnessss. Her stripes of blue and yellow and orange and white and gold and red and rust represent the high temperature recorded in Williamsburg on every day of the year. Agnessss basked in the sunshine of June 20th—the highest high temperature recorded day. But Agnessss stayed close to the radiators on January 20th, the lowest recorded temperature day.

Come see Agnessss for yourself. She is delighted to show off her snakeskin of many colors. She likes lounging in the padded rocking chair in the Otis Alcove in the library—beware when you sit down! And she is particularly fond of Scrabble, so you can join her in playing the library’s giant community Scrabble game. Meekins is open Tuesday, 10-6; Wednesday 1-7; Thursday 3-6; and Saturday 9-2. Everyone is welcome. Daria D’Arienzo, Meekins Archivist, and photographer. #throwbackthursday; #tbt.
