The wonderful Meekins Library is full of surprises! Strolling all around inside the Library there is so much to see—not only books. Beautiful stained-glass windows of inkwells, scrolls and, yes, books, grace all the rooms and the passage from the old to the new building. Fanciful creatures look down from high on the bookshelves. Jim Kitchen’s party-goer sculpture forever holds her decorated birthday cake just as you enter the Riverside Room. Once inside the room you see a fairy lost in the world of the book she is reading. Over in the Picture Book Room, Rochelle’s Library friends gather together waiting for her stories. In the front John and Alta Black Room, Tom Haxo’s sculptures of the librarians over the periodical shelves always wear a variety of hats. And on the mantel sits a preserved dragonfly globe. Walking down the stairs, wooden buckets balance carefully on the historic Weights and Measures Cabinet. A chessboard is set for a game in the Teen Alcove. Technical Services has a collection of critters marching along the top of the cupboards. And in the Local History area you can find everything from Williamsburg High School yearbooks to vintage local milk bottles. Do you have a favorite spot in Meekins? What surprise have you found there? #throwbackthursday; #tbt
