Bring your kids or your grandkids or just yourself and come on into the cool, comfortable Meekins and explore the Picture Book Room. For decades this has been every young child’s favorite room in the library—a special spot where everything is just the right size when you are pint size. Shelves and shelves full of classic and new illustrated books chosen with care for our youngest library visitors—many at just the height young hands can reach. Children’s Librarian Rochelle’s special rocker still sits in a patch of sunlight ready for a family story. The cushioned window seats are a cozy nook on a rainy day and a cheerful perch on a sunny one. Drawings and pictures by local artists brighten the walls, and some were created specially to benefit Meekins by Heather Bargeron. Take a look at the dozens of squares in the big quilt made by long-time library volunteer Amy Bedell over the course of more than 10 years—inspired by her favorite books, book characters, pets, her own mother’s silk screen art and gifts of quilt squares from friends and family. See if you can identify any of the critters. Over the years, school kids in particular love to play “I Spy” with the quilt. Browse and find a well-loved vintage book from your own life or select something new for your family. Taking a peek into the Picture Book Room will make you smile.
