SUMMARY:Ask an Archivist Day!
DESCRIPTION:October is American Archives Month. It is also Family History Month\, National Cookbook Month and National Cookie Month among many others. Want to preserve those wonderful old family photographs and letters? Collect your quirky family tales and legends? Save those cookbooks with your grandmother’s special notes? Find a vintage recipe for that favorite cookie you remember—to make it to share with your family and friends? Figure out something about the street you live on in town? \n\n\n\nCome to Meekins on Wednesday\, October 14th from 3-7 pm and Ask an Archivist. Meekins Archivist\, Daria D’Arienzo\, will be here to answer your questions\, share advice about preserving your family papers and stories\, offer tips for exploring the library’s Local History and Archival Collections\, or just to talk about any and all things historical and archival. \n\n\n\nArchives hold the stories of people\, families\, communities\, and more. Archives connect people—to their past—to their present—and to their future and to each other. Archival materials are the documentary evidence of lives and events\, and the facts used to interpret those lives and events. They don’t have to be big and fancy. They are the things created during the everyday lives and actions of everyday people and organizations. They offer direct insights into the events as lived—and can be as simple as a recipe for a favorite family soup or even a text witnessing a memorable event. Saving your story today makes a difference. What is your story? \n\n\n\nCome to Meekins on October 14\, 2026\, for Ask an Archivist Day and ask your Archivist.

SUMMARY:Artist Reception: Photography by Thomas Ulrich
DESCRIPTION:Join us for reception featuring the photography of the late Thomas Ulrich. \n\n\n\nThomas Ulrich (1936-2024) followed a number of paths in his professional life. For many years he worked in design and documentation for the local office of a larges software company. Before that\, he studied and taught archaeology in the Anthropology Department at the University of Massachusetts. Along the way\, he also served in the Army\, worked in banking and construction\, and drove a taxi. Music was another constant presence in his life. He played the double bass for many years in a variety of settings\, including jazz\, classical\, rock\, and folk music. \n\n\n\n“Photography has been part of my life\, on and off\, for more than fifty years. I was about twelve years old when I first became fascinated by the camera—a magical little box capable of preserving what I saw. My father explained the mechanics\, physics\, and chemistry behind film photography\, but despite understanding the process\, it still felt like magic. In many ways\, it still does. The mechanics and physics of digital photography are every bit as fascinating as those of film\, perhaps even more so.” \n\n\n\n“Throughout all these years\, a common thread has run through my work. I am drawn to ordinary things that reveal themselves as extraordinary when viewed with attention. I look for commonplace subjects that possess their own quiet uniqueness\, beauty\, and significance—things that require patience\, curiosity\, and a particular way of seeing. What interests me most is the moment of discovery\, the instant when something familiar suddenly becomes new.” \n\n\n\n“That “aha” moment—the moment when we see something we had not seen before—is why I make photographs.” \n\n\n\nAvailable for viewing during open library hours this October. The gallery occupies the same space as our community room; if there is an ongoing program\, we ask that patrons refrain from interrupting the event.

SUMMARY:Federico García Lorca in Vermont
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) – perhaps the most celebrated Spanish poet and playwright of the 20th century – has a special connection to Vermont? \n\n\n\nIn 1929\, Lorca came to the US to study English at Columbia University\, and that summer he visited his friend and lover\, Phillip Cummings\, a native of Hardwick\, in Vermont. The two spent time together in a classic camp on the shores of Lake Eden\, where Lorca was inspired to write several poems\, including his “Double Poem of Lake Eden\,” a cornerstone of his final collection\, Poet in New York. \n\n\n\nIn August 1936\, at the very beginning of the Spanish Civil War\, Lorca dropped off the manuscript at his publisher in Madrid and took the train to Granada to visit his family\, where he was picked up by Francoist insurgents\, unceremoniously executed by firing squad\, and buried in an unmarked grave. \n\n\n\nIn her talk\, Patricia Billingsley will explore the history of Lorca’s relationship with Cummings\, discuss how their ten days together in Vermont influenced Lorca’s life and poetry\, and explain why much of this important history was actively hidden by his surviving family and biographers for decades. \n\n\n\nPatricia A. Billingsley is an independent researcher and biographer with a special interest in poets and writers of the early twentieth century. Originally based in western Massachusetts\, she maintains close ties to the Vermont region where Lorca and Cummings created their own private Eden in August 1929.

SUMMARY:A Conversation on Day of the Dead: A Mexican Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Join Williamsburg resident Jose Lopez Ganem for a conversation about Día de Muertos\, a Mesoamerican tradition seen from the perspective of Mexico — the epicenter of this syncretic practice\, (re)born of the encounter between Indigenous beliefs and the Spanish conquest. We’ll look at how this reflection on the souls of the past overlaps with familiar Judeo-Christian beliefs\, while keeping a method of celebration unique to the Indigenous peoples who continue to live and celebrate across the middle of the continent. Pan de muerto — Day of the Dead bread — will be served. \n\n\n\nPatrons are also invited to bring a photograph or meaningful object in memory of a loved one who has passed and add it to the library’s ofrenda. \n\n\n\nPresenter bio: Jose Lopez Ganem is a lecturer in Boston University’s Food Studies programs and executive director of the Institute for Cacao and Chocolate Research\, which he co-leads with his wife\, Carla Martin\, another Williamsburg resident and a Harvard professor. His work examines the real economic and cultural relationship that Mexico and Mexicans have with cacao\, and how that sits alongside the international market. Within the Mexican calendar\, Day of the Dead is one of the most important chocolate occasions of the year — both for the diversity of what is consumed and for the economic output it represents for cacao producers around the country. From an early age\, Jose competed – and eventually lead his team – Mexico City’s Day of the Dead altar competition\, a regional contest among middle and high schools across a city of more than 20 million people (for contrast\, Williamsburg has proudly above 2\,000 living souls!)\, earning gold multiple times at the neighborhood\, borough\, and city level. He has continued to build an altar every year since immigrating to the United States\, and it is now an important staple of his household in Massachusetts.
