SUMMARY:February Exhibition Opens: Sketchbook Translations
DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, artist Cyndy Sperry translates small moments from different sketchbooks into large\, tapestry-scale collages. The pieces incorporate woodblock prints\, silkscreen imagery\, charcoal figure drawings\, painted papers and leftover student work from the summer program at Sugarhill Art. The New England boreal forest\, rocky Maine Coast\, paintings by Edward Hicks\, the lions of the Ishtar Gate and Processional Way from Babylon\, and Piero Della Francisca’s Adoration weave into the work…as well as many walks in the woods and river swims alone and in good company. \n\n\n\nAvailable for viewing this February during open library hours. The gallery occupies the same space as our community room; if there is an ongoing program\, we ask that patrons refrain from interrupting the event.  \n\n\n\nWe also invite you to our artist reception\, held Saturday\, February 7\, 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

DESCRIPTION:Authors\, Tom Weiner\, a Northampton-based writer\, educator\, and anti- racist activist\, and Dr. Amilcar Shabazz\, professor in the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies at UMass Amherst\, treasurer and former President of the National Council for Black Studies will speak about their book\, In Defiance: 20 Abolitionists You Were Never Taught in School. \n\n\n\nThe book brings to light the often-suppressed stories of those who risked everything to end enslavement. Profiling 20 black and white men and women\, highlighting their courage\, activism\, and unwavering commitment to freedom. Through vivid vignettes\, including their own words\, their struggles and sacrifices come to life. \n\n\n\nAmid ongoing efforts to erase history\, these stories serve as a powerful corrective- meant to challenge\, inspire\, and ignite action. The book weaves both author’s perspectives into the narrative\, emphasizing the importance of learning from the past.
