SUMMARY:JUNE ART EXHIBITION OPENS - Once Upon a Carrot: Love Letters to My Family\, Chapter the Second
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit of drawings by Thom Haxo entitled Once Upon a Carrot: Love Letters to My Family\, Chapter the Second will be on display in the Neil Hammer Gallery for the month of June. \n\n\n\nSpecializing in figure sculpture and drawing\, puppetry\, and computer modeling and animation\, Thom Haxo is an imaginative artist and associate art professor emeritus at Hampshire College (MA). He was a finalist in the 2001 Harold Connolly Memorial competition\, the 2001 Sojourner Truth Memorial competition\, and the 1988 Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. Memorial competition. Haxo’s commissioned sculpture for the James Brendan Connolly Memorial currently stands in Columbus Park in South Boston. His works have been exhibited at the Holter Museum of Art (MT)\, Sharon Art Center (NH)\, Boston Public Library\, Hampshire College\, and the Northampton Center for the Arts (MA)\, amongst other galleries. Haxo has worked on set\, puppet\, and mask design for the last twenty years. Projects include The Skrikerby Caryl Churchill\, I Stand Before You Naked by Joyce Carol Oates\, and The Millennium Two- Step\, a collaboration with Peter Lobdell and Charles Ditto. Most recently\, he has worked on Noveto\, another collaborative project with Lobdell and Ditto\, and Naufrage\, a work with his daughter\, composer Cara Haxo. Haxo received a B.F.A. from Pratt Institute and an M.F.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in Haydenville\, Massachusetts\, with his wife\, Anne\, and his cats\, Mimi and Moose. \n\n\n\nAvailable for viewing during open library hours this June. The gallery occupies the same space as our community room; if there is an ongoing program\, we ask that patrons refrain from interrupting the event. \n\n\n\nAn artist’s reception will be held on Friday\, June 19\, 3:30-5:30 PM.

DUNPHY SCHOOL.  \n\n\n\nCome celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. \n\n\n\nIn 1973\, emerging professional photographer Jonathan Barkan was contracted by the Massachusetts Bicentennial Commission. His assignment: create a multi-projector traveling slide show. It was designed to inspire a statewide reenactment and tell the full story of Henry Knox and his plan to retrieve and haul cannons from Fort Ticonderoga\, New York\, to Boston. \n\n\n\nThis story linked the entire Commonwealth from west to east and led directly to the first major military victory of the War for Independence: Evacuation Day. \n\n\n\nThe original media program has now been modernized for 21st-century audiences as a state-of-the-art video. It is enlivened with additional imagery and retains a re-creation featuring period cannons\, draft horses\, and oxen. \n\n\n\nMr. Barkan will screen the show and briefly share his personal experiences and production challenges. \n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning songwriter Louise Coombe for a workshop focused on stories\, storytelling\, and songwriting. Open to all ages and experience levels\, the workshop encourages everyone – from curious listeners to aspiring writers – to discover and develop their own stories. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will briefly summarize the history of storytelling in songwriting\, how it has shaped social change throughout history and why it’s so important to our current cultural and political discourse and future. The program will end with a challenge to participants to find a story in their lives that needs telling either as spoken word or song and how to approach and refine it. \n\n\n\nLouise is an award-winning songwriter who has been putting stories into songs for 25 years. She has won performing songwriting awards from prestigious festival songwriting contests all over the United States…CT Folk Fest Performing Songwriting winner\, Telluride Bluegrass Troubadour winner; Kerrville Folk Festival (TX) 2x performing songwriting winner; Falcon Ridge Folk Fest (NY) Emerging Artist winner; SolarFest (VT) Performing Songwriting winner; Mass Cultural Individual Artist Grant winner 2025. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is provided with funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Williamsburg Cultural Council.
