Did you solve this summer’s Meekins Library reading mystery and “find your voice”? Did you get into—and then out of—her many Escape Rooms? Was your Lego creation on display after a morning of building with the blocks? Did she introduce you to a new favorite game that you now play all the time? Did you spend Saturdays in her D&D group engaging in all sorts of adventures?
Did you create a glowing light or an erupting volcano, deconstruct the guts of a computer, fold an amazing origami creature, or chalk the sidewalks at the Library? Were you part of her graphic novel book groups? Did you come over from school to discover an unknown online source for your science project? Did you enjoy a magician, an improv theater experience, or a yoga class, hold a giant snake, or meet all kinds of rehabilitated wild creatures on the lawn at Meekins?
Did you see her wizardly Halloween costumes, or meet Ssssmeekins, her ever -growing weather snake? Did you do all the Library scavenger hunts, and get a prize each time? Did she recommend a good book, teach you to draw a cartoon, encourage your writing, ask your advice on a program, or simply encourage you to read, read, read? Did you ever use the new Meekins website and get the scoop on an upcoming event, or find a quick link to something you needed right away?
If you or your children or grandchildren can say yes to any of these, you have been lucky enough to experience “Naomi Magic” at Meekins. After 5 years, Naomi is off on her next big adventure. She leaves a legacy of innovative programs, crazy crafts, games galore, Escape Room wizardry, and good will for kids of all ages in town, and so much more. On August 10, 2023, everyone at Meekins will be waving goodbye to our esteemed colleague Naomi Schmidt, the Kmit Children’s Programing Librarian. Let us all wish her well in her new quest! Daria D’Arienzo, Meekins Archivist and photographer. #throwbackthursday; #tbt.
