"Lost Village of Roberts Meadow" Book Talk"
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Join local author John Irving Clapp discuss his book, "The Lost Village of Roberts Meadow."  He will also provide a slide show of photographs of this lost part of Northampton.
”It’s a familiar story here in western Massachusetts; a once-thriving neighborhood is dismantled in order to supply drinking water for the benefit of many. It happened in Northampton, piece by piece; first one dam, then another, then a re-routing of the little brook, the taking of homes and farms, the creation of a watershed, etc. By no means as dramatic or far-reaching as the Quabbin Reservoir project that dis-incorporated and flooded four entire towns, this outlying neighborhood situated in Northampton’s northwesterly corner, nonetheless, was similarly dismantled and claimed for the “greater good.” …Northampton’s village of Roberts Meadow has all but vanished.”

Ahab was Wrong: Saving a Whale
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
A Talk by Bruce McCutcheon, Ph.D
Retiring from University at Albany after a 30 year career as a teacher and researcher, my wife and i retired to Beaufort, North Carolina.  There I began my next chapter looking for new territory to explore.  I volunteered at the Rachel Carson Reserve as a field guide and then added more activity through connecting with the Curator, Keith Rittmaster, of Natural Science at the NC Maritime Museum.
One cold February day he asked the team, "Are you up for an advaenture?" Nobody suspected this would lead to an undertaking spanning several years, starting with saving the bones of a dead but still warm sperm whale that had washed ashore at Cape Lookout, NC.  This adventure concluded with the whale skeleton, now named "Echo," hanging in the rafters of the museum.
