Explore the Write Within

a personalized workshop with

award-winning author

Multiple award-winning author Roland Merullo offers a workshop for writers on Monday, May 12, 2014 at 7 p.m. at the Meekins Library in Williamsburg. During EXPLORE THE WRITER WITHIN, Merullo will give any and all kinds of advice to everyone who asks. Although Merullo will not read manuscripts, he will speak with each writer about his or her individual plan or project, in a way that will be helpful to the group as a whole.

The workshop will begin with a short general talk about writing, getting started, obstacles, and some observations about the practical and emotional aspects of the writing process. Participants are encouraged to come prepared to share their ideas and to ask questions. The workshop offers the opportunity for writers to talk with Merullo in detail about their individual ideas and work, in a small group setting.

The presentation is scheduled from 7:00 to 9:30 but Merullo says he is happy to stay until the last question is answered. The evening is open to writers of all levels of accomplishment and people in various stages of a writing project. Novice and new writers are particularly welcome. Library Director, Lisa Wenner, says, "We were totally thrilled when Roland offered to do a workshop to benefit Meekins. His newest book, Vatican Waltz, is shortlisted for the 2013 Massachusetts Book Award, given by the Massachusetts Center for the Book. An announcement is expected in early May. Roland is a generous speaker and a compassionate person. We know that the presentation will be a valuable one for any writer."

Merullo is the author of: Taking the Kids to Italy, Vatican Waltz, The Talk Funny Girl, A Little Love Story, Breakfast with Buddha, Fidel's Last Days, American Savior, Revere Beach Trilogy, Russian Requiem, Golfing with God, and others.

Merullo's Talk Funny Girl is a 2012 American Library ALEX Award winner, an award given to the best books for teens originally written for adults. Merullo is also a previous winner of the Massachusetts Book Award for non-fiction and the Maria Thomas Fiction Prize. He has been a Booklist Editor's Choice recipient and was among the finalists for a PEN New England / Winship Prize. In 2009, Breakfast with Buddha was nominated for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and American Savior was chosen as an Honor Book in Fiction at the Massachusetts Book Awards. Revere Beach Boulevard was named one of New England's top 100 essential books by The Boston Globe.

Explore the Writer Within is a benefit for the Meekins Library, honoring retiring Director, Lisa Wenner. All proceeds will go to the Meekins Library Annual Fund. A donation of $50 is suggested.
